Rock Steady Boxing is the name, and fighting back against Parkinson’s Disease is the game!

by Paige Syjut

Have you heard of Rock Steady Boxing? It’s okay, most people haven’t. Rock Steady Boxing is a non-contact boxing program that was designed to slow the progression of both motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease through high-intensity physical exercise, motor skill learning, transitional movements, cognitive engagement, and community support.

Since its inception in 2006, Rock Steady Boxing has been serving the community in the fight against Parkinson’s Disease by offering individual and group exercise to combat the symptoms and progression of  the neurodegenerative disorder. There are now hundreds of locations all over the United States and across the world offering group classes and individual lessons. Leigh Harter Speech Services is now one of those locations!

While originally created and primarily used with individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, Rock Steady Boxing may also benefit other members of the community, such as individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Cerebral Palsy (CP), and much more. This program can provide people with a valuable form of exercise and support while they work to fight against their debilitating diagnosis.

Rock Steady Boxing not only offers benefits of physical exercise, but also provides a strong sense of community. This gathering of like-minded individuals fighting back against the same disease provides a network of understanding, education, support, accountability, respect, socialization, and positive challenges. Participation in this program not only aims to slow the progression of the disease, but also focuses on enhancing the overall quality of life.

If you are looking to slow the progression of Parkinson’s Disease or other degenerative disease, and are looking to make improvements in areas such as strength, endurance, range of motion, mobility, balance, posture, quality of life, and confidence, you may be a great candidate for participation in this program. As a Certified Rock Steady Boxing Coach and Occupational Therapist, my role is to complete the necessary assessments, provide skills training, and offer guidance, while tailoring the program to fit your specific needs and abilities.

Our program focuses on high-intensity exercise, and it’s designed to not only help manage the progression of Parkinson’s Disease but also to make the process enjoyable and fulfilling. We believe that working hard and having fun are essential components of achieving positive outcomes in your journey towards better health.

I look forward to working with you, customizing the program to your unique needs, and helping you achieve your goals in a supportive and engaging environment. Together, we will fight back!
